The Data Behind National Pride

Let’s take a look at the data. As a member of the Angus Reid Forum you participate in surveys and at time political polls that shape the news and views of our nation. Our public Affairs team, in partnership with our friends over at the Angus Reid Institute have done some pretty extensive work on the rise of Canadian Nationalism and we thought we’d share some key findings with you here.

Pride in Canada

We know that pride in the country had been deteriorating prior to the tariffs issue. However, the tariff issue has clearly reversed this trend. An increasing proportion of Canadians are very proud of the country, although it is notable that three-in-ten are only somewhat or not proud.

Anger is not far behind

Months of annexation threats and tariff battles have soured Canada’s mood toward the U.S. Canadians are even booing the American anthem at hockey games. So much for being a polite bunch!

Overall, how do these threats of tariffs and annexation from Trump make you feel?

Putting our money where our mouth is

The threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump has also changed Canadian consumer behaviour. We’re looking for ways to spend our hard earned dollar on domestic goods while boycotting American products

Putting this another way, there are more than four-in-five (85%) Canadians who are planning, or already have, replaced U.S. products with Canadian ones.

Women leading the charge; Boomers banging the drum

Women are more likely than men to be hard-core “Buy Canadian”. But by far the biggest difference is between younger and older Canadians.

So where to next?

It’s been a roller coaster ride of emotions for Canadians. The rise in national pride has impacted personal finances and political views.

New data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds the governing Liberal Party – led by newly sworn-in Prime Minister Mark Carney has surged to a five-point vote intention advantage nationally after trailing by 29 points in late December.
